THAYANKAVU SASTHAVU

Prathishta: Lord Ayyappa

Dist: Thrissur

Thaluk:

Panchayath:

Festival:

The 'Kodiyettu' of the festival is in the month 'Kumbham' on the day 'Uthram'. After 8 days the celebration will finish, along with the 'Arattu'.

Importance / Main offerings:

'Thiruvonam Uttu' in the month of 'Thulam' is an important function in this temple.

Description:

The presiding deity of this temple is Lord Ayyappa. In this temple Lord Ayyappa resides with wife and son and the idol faces to east side. There are 3 poojas and 'Seeveli' in this temple everyday. The sub deities are Lord Vinayaka, Lord Siva, Bhagavathy and Ovil Ittyasan.

There is a story behind the installation of idol in this temple. When the enemity between the brahmins increased, they throw away the idol of 'Chiravallur Sastha' to a small forest near the 'Uttupura'(feeding house) of 'Choondal Bhattathiri'. Time passed. When the servant cut that stone with her knife, blood came from it. Thus Bhattathiri realized that the stone has some power and build a temple there. After that when the king of 'Manakkulam' killed 'Bhattathiri' for his wealth, the temple was handed over to 'Chirattaman Moose' family.

The 'komaram' or 'Velichappad' of this temple will never use 'Chilambu' or 'Aramani'. Instead of that they use 'Pattu' and 'Churika'.
